Family deferment (parental leave/working mother)

Eligibility for this deferment is based on the disbursement date of your first loan. To be eligible for this deferment, the first disbursement must be prior to 07/01/1993.

Use this form to apply for a deferment if you are on parental leave or if you are a working mother.

To qualify for parental leave, you must be pregnant, caring for your newborn child or newly adopted child; you must not be working full time or attending school; and you must have been enrolled in school at least half time during the six months preceding this deferment.

To qualify as a working mother, you must have entered or re-entered the workforce within one year preceding the deferment; you must be working full time in a position earning not more than $1 above the federal minimum wage; and you must be the mother of a child who has not yet enrolled in first grade or a higher grade in elementary school.
