Deferment

You are entitled to defer your student loan payments when applicable criteria are met. Through deferment you can postpone your scheduled student loan payments for various reasons, such as unemployment, economic hardship, and school enrollment. Your lender or servicer determines if you meet the requirements for a deferment.

Economic hardship deferment

Use this form to apply for an economic hardship deferment if:

  1. You have economic hardship deferment under the Federal Direct Loan Program or the Federal Perkins Loan Program; or


  2. You receive public assistance, such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Supplemental Security Income, Food Stamps, or state general public assistance; or


  3. You are serving as a Peace Corps volunteer; or


  4. You work full-time and your monthly gross income is no more than the larger of the amounts listed below for your state (Worksheet B can help you determine your eligibility); or


(a) Federal Minimum Wage Rate ($7.25 an hour)$ 1256.67
(b) Poverty Line for a Family of Two:
All States (except Alaska and Hawaii),
including District of Columbia
